Hosting a Harry Potter party is a magical experience for all ages. One of the most exciting parts of the planning process is decorating your space to resemble the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. With a little creativity and some basic supplies, you can easily create your own DIY party decorations to transport your guests to the Wizarding World.
DIY Hogwarts House Banners
One of the most iconic elements of Hogwarts is the house banners that hang in the Great Hall. You can easily recreate these banners by using felt, fabric paint, and a little bit of crafting know-how. Start by cutting rectangles of felt in the colors of the four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor (red and gold), Hufflepuff (yellow and black), Ravenclaw (blue and bronze), and Slytherin (green and silver). Next, use fabric paint to add the house crests and any other details you'd like. Hang the banners on your walls using twine or ribbon.
DIY Floating Candles
In the Hogwarts Great Hall, floating candles hover above the tables, creating a magical ambiance. Recreate this effect in your own home by making your own DIY floating candles. You'll need white taper candles, clear fishing line, and hot glue. First, tie a length of fishing line around the middle of each candle. Then, use hot glue to attach the other end of the fishing line to the ceiling. Once all of your candles are hung, turn off the lights and enjoy the enchanting glow.
DIY Platform 9 3/4 Entrance
Transport your guests to the Wizarding World by creating a DIY Platform 9 3/4 entrance to your party. Use red and gold streamers to create a backdrop for your "brick wall," and hang a sign that reads "Platform 9 3/4" above it. You can even add a trolley with a Hogwarts trunk and owl cage to complete the look. Encourage your guests to take pictures as they "enter" the Wizarding World.
DIY Potion Bottles
No Hogwarts party is complete without a few potion bottles scattered throughout the room. You can easily create your own by repurposing old glass bottles and vials. Fill them with colored water, glitter, or small trinkets to create the look of magical potions. Add labels with names like "Polyjuice Potion" or "Felix Felicis" to complete the effect.
DIY Sorting Hat
No Harry Potter party is complete without a Sorting Hat to assign guests to their Hogwarts houses. You can easily create your own by using a brown paper bag and stuffing it with newspaper or tissue paper. Use fabric paint or markers to add the face and details of the Sorting Hat. Have each guest "try on" the hat and assign them to their Hogwarts house based on their personality traits. With these DIY party decorations, you can easily transform your space into Hogwarts and create a magical atmosphere for your guests. Remember to have fun and let your creativity shine!
